"And it came to pass as The Caller had spoken it into being: there were three great dragons of terrible might, stomping their furious claws, digging deeply into the very earth and blood of Noth. They snarled great threats and blew smoke and fire out of their nostrils. And the terror to behold was too great as, in their rage, it seemed that they would consumer one another." — An excerpt from the 'Scroll of Secrets.'
Welcome to Burning Trident: A custom setting for the Burning Wheel Fantasy Roleplaying System.
Please Note: This setting and wiki is a work in progress. I'm updating and adding everyday!
What is Burning Trident?
Burning Trident is nothing more than a player designed, custom setting for use with the Burning Wheel Fantasy Roleplaying System and Character Burner. The Magic Burner and Monster Burner have also been used in the design process. All four books are intended as source material for Burning Trident. Please feel free to use or augment the info on this site for your own campaigns. It is in no way legally or otherwise affiliated with Luke Crane.
Where is the campaign located?
Noth — a medium sized continent with a varied climate organized by its rulers into kingdoms. Coexisting on it live four major races: Dwarves, Elves, Humans, and Orcs. Other races do exist, but only in minority. Noth is surrounded by sea and, though sea-faring vessels exist, what is beyond those seas is not known.
What is Noth like?
The Kingdoms have a very late medieval/early renaissance historical feel. The world is a gritty, brutal place marked by the cycle of the "haves" and the "have-nots." Wealthy kings rule their kingdoms, justly and unjustly; terrible chieftains raid the wilds with ranging clans; proud dwarven fortresses hold power; ancient elves roam tirelessly; powerful warmages command legions; curious scientists conduct their experiments; and even holy priests carry out their shepherding through miracles.
Servitude is present, though slavery is only practiced in the Sands. Due to the Centarii Invasion, the peoples of Noth have broken ground into the very early level of steam and musket technology, but the primary technological thrust is medieval in nature. The kingdoms stand on shaky ground with one another as the three major schools of thought — Faith, Magic, and Science — battle over which philosophy will dominate Noth's future.
What does Noth hold for Player-Characters?
Characters will struggle amidst the changing ebb and flow of world belief systems to find themselves, leaning on their own understanding of Faith, Magic, and Science. Characters will knowingly and unknowingly advance the influence of some schools of thought, while decreasing others. Characters will be both pawns and players in the political intrigue of the kingdoms, as well as martial “movers and shakers” in the face of physical conflicts. Characters will become heroes or villains, martyrs or heretics, enlightened or mad, lords or tyrants, and more.
The Burning Trident "Golden Rule":
When it comes to the info presented here, there is a golden rule that every player should abide by: If it isn't there, if it isn't detailed, if it needs explaining, if it's not fleshed out, make it up! This is a custom setting intended to be a spring board for vibrant, living campaigns where each player has a real say in the world he or she is playing in. No feelings get hurt by embellishments. Nobody got paid to put this together. Use what you like and make up the rest.
